Breaking News

Please look through last year's Pulitzer Prize winner for the category of breaking news. Read through the work presented on that page, reading some if it closely and skimming other parts of it.

When you finish, please answer these questions in a reflection and turn it in on Google Classroom.

Reflection: I'd like you to write a fairly simple reflection paper that is 2 pages and MLA formatted where you introduce the news story and reflect upon the event and it's coverage.

Consider the kinds of questions listed below in your essay. PLEASE, do not just answer each question.
  • What made the news reporting so noteworthy?
  • What was the emphasis of the news?
  • How was the news presented? (What did it look like on the page--what kind of page was it presented on?)
  • What did the reporters do to get their information? Was that clear?
  • What kinds of ways did the news outlet report on the news?
    • When did they use each type, and how did the various ways compliment each other?
  • What kinds of stories did the paper emphasize?
  • For follow-up stories, how did the paper refrain from simply repeating themselves?
  • Consider the style of the stories. What are they like, stylistically?
  • In what ways might a school paper like ours learn from news like this?
    • Said another way, how might we realistically implement elements we see these reporters doing?
