  • Discuss mastery trackers, proficiency scales, review 1.1 Practice #1
    • ​Student Example: The entire story is filled with blank spots and torn out pieces that the readers are left to fill in. For example, at the very end, when the father is done with the story, there are a few lines that are left unclear, " But he stays by the window, remembering. They had laughed. They had leaned on each other and laughed until the tears had come, while everything else—the cold, and where he’d go in it—was outside, for a while anyway " (Carver 2). My question is, is he talking about his daughter, or his ex wife, if that's what she is. I can see it going either way. We discussed that the mother and father had divorced, but I find it more likely that she died. The mood does not seem happy, or sad for that matter. However, it seems reminiscent, perhaps a little melancholy. Maybe no names are told because the father cannot stand to say the name of his now deceased wife, which he loved very much, and if not one person's, then it makes more sense not to say anyone's. This perfectly demonstrates the use of leaving out details so that the audience can decide what happened.
