Purpose – This English course is designed to promote thought and practice expression and argument. Through the analysis and discussion of literature, students will build their own ability to critically analyze writing across multiple genres; develop personal expression in writing, thinking, and discussion; and ideally, give students the necessary tools and practice to become informed, aware, and communicative citizens.
Basic Course Content and Skills Taught - Passing this course is required for graduation of Senior High. This course will cover major American literary works, poetry, and essays. Among other assignments, students will be expected to write essays and literary analysis, complete a research paper, and use various digital tools to complete assignments. Above all, we will focus on developing the ability to comprehend and critically think paired with effective/advanced communication.
Assessment - Letter grades are based on a combination of daily assessments, larger projects, and tests. The percentage of the total points possible and will be the result of daily assignments; papers, reports, and presentations; and comprehensive assessments. Additionally, there are 2-3 essential projects/papers per semester to be completed in order receive credit for this class.
No extra credit will be available for this course, but a student may redo any assignment to show mastery. Assessments are made on a 5 point grading system. Assessment codes are as follows:
Late Work - There is no such thing as late work in my classroom, only work that has yet to be completed. However, but they also may redo any assignment over the course of the semester for credit. Any assignment may be turned in up until 3:15 on the final incentive day of the six week grading period.

Academic Integrity, Plagiarism - Academic integrity means honesty and responsibility in education. Academic assignments exist to help students learn; assessments exist to show how far we have come in our learning process. Therefore, all work and all grades should result from the student's own understanding and effort. All assessments, assignments, and papers must be the original work of the student. For papers or class assignments that are plagiarized or not the original work of the student will receive no credit (0) and be referred to the assistant principal’s office. Don’t cheat.

- M - (50%) Incomplete, missing.
- 1/D – (65%) Good attempt, but not sufficient to meet the standard
STUDENTS MUST REDO ASSIGNMENTS ON WHICH THEY RECEIVE AN M or 1/D - 2/C – (75%) You get it enough to move on.
- 3/B – (85%) You get it pretty well and sufficiently express your ideas.
- 4/A – (95%) Not only do you get it, but you express your understanding in excellent an thorough fashion.

- Be Prepared: Come to class with all materials (pencil, notebook, SSR book, and any additional reading materials).
- Be Present: Come to class on time and ready to read, write, discuss, and most importantly, think.
- Be Respectful: Respect your classmates and teacher in ideas and in action.
Classroom Procedures -
- Students are liable for any damages done to classroom materials, computers, or books checked out to them.
- Due to our frequent use of chromebooks, students are only allowed to have water in a closed top container. Don’t make a mess.
- All legitimate contributions to classroom discussion are valued and encouraged. However, please ensure your input is respectful. Hateful, slanderous, or disrespectful comments will not be tolerated.
- Cell phones are a reality of the world we live in, but are not a necessity for this class. As such, students may earn the right/responsibility of using a cell phone by writing an essay see Fall RSVCP assignment for details.
- All classroom rules and expectations apply when a substitute teacher is present.
- Issues (aggressive or dangerous behavior, insubordination, etc.) will result in immediate referral to the assistant principal’s office.
