Assignment Options

Over the spring semester students will practice journalism and design skills: graphic design, photography, and writing. 

At the end of the semester, you will compile activities you've created over the semester into a personal portfolio/magazine.

Portfolio Requirements

All categories will culminate in a multi-page (8) portfolio in InDesign of your work that will be published as a multi-page PDF in a size of your choosing.
  • Custom Cover.
  • Page numbers and at least one other “Master Page” element
  • Magazine must contain at least one article (300-600 words) with accompanying pictures (Personal Reflection, Bronc Nation magazine feature story, or other writing from the year)
  • You can include as many pictures as you want, but pictures must be captioned.
  • Must have a “design element” on each page. (try googling Magazine or Yearbook Design ideas for some inspiration)

Rubric

Cover - 25 pts
  • Features one main picture, but can be a collage or original design. 
  • All text is placed in a way that interacts with or doesn't take focus from picture
  • All text is readable and colors of text is appropriate to the magazine
  • All covers use boxes, lines, frames, circles or other design elements to enhance look.
Pictures and Captions - 25 pts
  • ALL photos have are labeled with at least a name/place, at least 5 need full sentence caption
Copy (words)- 25 pts
  • 2 columns in article
  • copy text (font is legible, no larger than 12 pt font)
  • Uniform fonts used
  • paragraphing and spacing clearly delinates sections of text
  • Edited, proofread
  • Includes one inset quote on page
  • Text presented for aesthetics and readability
Design - 25 pts 
  • Alignment
  • Negative space
  • Contrast
  • Heirarchy
