Follow these links to introduce you to graphic design and the program Adobe InDesign. Complete the following assignments. Open InDesign and follow along with the videos as you watch and read. Then, just my InDesign tutorials posted below to help create your Design.

NEWSPAPER Assignment 1: Recreating a layout
  • Your task is to recreate this layout in InDesign as best you can.
  • Create a new document with the following specs:
    • 8.5” x 11”
    • Margins = .75”
    • Bleed = .25”
    • 2 columns
  • Access the photos and copy here and use the following font styles
    • ​​SUGGESTION: Make every different piece of text it's own text box. AND, if you don't know 
    • Masthead text = Chaparral Pro, 60 pt., Bold Italic
    • Header text = MoolBoran, 16 pt.
    • Article title = Euclid, 17 pt., Bold
    • Byline = MoolBoran, 16 pt.
    • Body text = Times New Roman, 10 pt font, 10 pt leading
    • Inset quote text = Times New Roman, 14 pt font, 17 pt leading, Bold
  • When finished export your layout as a jpeg and attach it to the Design module assignment in Google classroom.


YEARBOOK Assignment 1: Create a yearbook design
Using the files located in your yearbook journalism server you are to create a double page spread. Check out the examples Mr. Restad has marked in the computer lab

​Dimensions
  • 2 pages
  • start on page 2
  • 8.5" wide x 11" tall
  • quarter inch bleed 
  • 1" margins (pictures can extend past the margins, but need to all the way to the bleed if they do)

Requirements
  • Headline
  • Subheading
  • Article spans at least 2 columns
  • at least 5 pictures WITH captions

Save your InDesign file in your folder and export a jpg of the page to upload to Google Classroom. (Be sure to export all pages as spreads)

Stuck? Search "yearbook layouts" in Google and find some inspiration. 
(If time allows) Assignment 2: Building a poster
  • Congratulations, your favorite music group is coming to town and they called you up to help promote their show. Your assignment is to create a poster advertising when and where they will be playing.
  • Posters should be
    • 11”x17”
    • Bleed: .25”
  • Poster must include the following
    • Band name
    • Date of show
    • Venue of Show
    • “Billings, Montana”
    • Picture of the band
  • This is your opportunity to be creative with fonts, styles, margins, and images. Check out some of these simple examples to get you started: (Queen, Zac Brown Band, Pink Floyd)
  • When finished Export your layout as a jpeg and attach it to the Design module assignment in Google classroom.
