Talking to and writing about strangers is hard. To practice your interviewing, writing, and editing skills, complete the two assignments below. Your test over this module will be the quality of your article and the proper editing of an article.

Assignment: Magazine Feature Article

OPTION 1: Person Profile
  • Think of a person from this school who you think is worthy of having a feature story written about them. This could be a teacher, a student, an administrator, or even a support staff, and the subject could be about anything: a passion, a sport, a position or job, or anything that makes that person unique. Interview that person.
OPTION 2: Trend Profile
  • Examine a thing or an organization that is having an impact on school society. Interview at least one person to give insight on this trend. Examples: Popular music trends, fashion trends, internet trends, tech, teaching trends.
 
  1. Write interview questions pertaining to this person (get approval from Mr. Restad before moving on to the next step).
    • Check​ out this wikihow article, but make sure you scroll down to the "Interviewing Someone for an Article" section if you need a refresher.
    • Or you could check out my Journalism Writing Unit if you missed this part of class.

  2. Send a practice email + conduct an interview
    1. First, send a "practice" professional email to Mr. Music and cc Mr. Restad asking to interview a student named "Herbie Hancock" about his role on the debate team. Use this email template a guide, but make your email unique. Have Mr. Restad check your email before sending.
    2. ​Look up your subject's schedule by asking the attendance clerks on the first floor.
    3. Create an email to their first period teacher with an appropriate subject and make it professional.

      • ​Be sure to left click on the name and select "copy email address"
    4. Before sending, please proofread the email and cc Mr. Restad.

  3. Using your interview, draft, revise, and edit your story into a 300-400 word article about your subject.
    • Here are some resources on examples of feature stories.
    • Some Feature writing notes we took in class
    • And some suggestions on how to write them. (Start reading at part 3 of the site)
    • And here's a good example of a feature story written in journalism format

  4. Proofread and edit your story then print a copy and turn it into the wire basket. Your story should:
    1. Contain a headline and subheading (video)
    2. Have an artistic lead (video)
    3. Use a defined nut graf
    4. Use at least 4 quotes to help build body paragraphs
    5. Follow the inverted pyramid format
    6. Follow journalism format for quotations, paragraphs, and transitions
    7. Be well proofread and edited to be free of all conventional errors.
    8. Times new roman, 12 point font, double spaced

Assessment
Your story must contain and will be graded on the following criteria
  • Strong/relevant headline and lead
  • Organization of content and paragraphs
  • Inclusion of quotations
  • Conventions (spelling, punctuation, grammar)
  • Turned in on time​
