Went to library for SSR books. SSR starts tomorrow. All students must have their own books to read.

Took notes on the following.

TOPIC SENTENCES
  • Identifies the main idea(s).
  • All ideas expressed or explored must fit under the “umbrella” of this topic sentence.
SUPPORTING IDEAS/EVIDENCE:
  • Give details to develop and support the main idea of the paragraph
  • EXAMPLES of EVIDENCE
    • Specific examples
    • Quotations
    • Explains ideas
COMMENTARY:
  • Explains why and how your supporting ideas relate back to your topic sentence
CONCLUDING SENTENCES
  • Restates main points in a new or more meaningful way
  • Wraps up all ideas pertaining to that topic sentence

Pretend you’re a company and English is your business. Build and assess goal that goes beyond “getting a grade”

ASSIGNMENT
  • On one side, write your EDUCATIONAL MISSION STATEMENT (what is your goal for the class)
  • Remember, a mission statement is a short and simple statement (~30 words and 1-2 sentences) which outlines a company or person’s purpose beyond selling something.
  • CANNOT BE: To get a grade, to pass, to graduate. Must be a skill or idea based goal.
