Mr. Restad keeps this page up to date
so you can check what we did while you were gone... or asleep.

Monday, Mar 2

2/28/2020

DO NOW
  • Complete the daily check-in
  • Turn in or check grade/comments on "Way to Rainy Mountain Reading Assignments"
  • Brainstorm a list of skills you'll need to learn, use, or practice to successfully complete a research project.

AGENDA
Explore research topics you are interested in and want to explore through multiple perspectives
  • Check out Mr. Restad’s “Choosing a topic” page to outline what is required for your topic.
  • One of the hardest parts of choosing a topic is finding one that interests you, is narrow enough to be manageable, but also intriguing enough to keep your interest for weeks to come.
    • Too broad = US Immigration policy. This is probably a 20-30 page paper to do well.
    • Just right = Immigration policy for people who are brought to the US as children.
  • Discuss your topics with your group to help come up with ideas.

Fill out the "Preliminary Research" chart posted on Google Classroom to get to know the conversation surrounding your topic
  • Familiarize yourself with what is currently being discussed in academics, the news, or in government about your topic.
  • What is controversial? Where do people agree or disagree on your subject?
  • Start defining key issues and terms that are associated with your topic.
  • Keep notes on what you think you know currently, what you are learning, and what where the gaps in your knowledge are.
  • Keep notes! As you are reading, keep a list of websites you visit and what information they hold.

AGENDA
  • Class Socratic Discussion
  • Remember, our goals here are to...
    • 1. work on understanding other perspectives
    • 2. connect these stories to how they might show history and heritage's effect on people.
    • 3. dig deeper into the readings to uncover meaning or purpose of the texts.

If you missed today or didn't participate in the discussion, you can make that portion of the assignment by writing a 1 paragraph (8-10 sentences) reflection on what the main point was of one of the texts presented.

Friday, Feb 7

2/6/2020

DO NOW
  • Complete the daily check-in
  • Write into the day (periods 3 and 4): What is your heritage?
What makes you who you are? Part of the answer lies in your heritage, or the beliefs, traditions, and cultures passed down from you from preceding generations. How have things you’ve learned about the past help shape who you are today?

AGENDA
  • Read and annotate "History and Heritage" texts
  • Answer Reading Questions (in Google Classroom)
    • EXAMPLE: Truth addresses her audience as "children." Do you think this an effective strategy? Why or why not?
    • I think the speaker's addressing of the audience as children is both hilarious and rhetorically effective for two reasons. First, Truth is either addressing this speech to the actual children of her world as a testament to the change that is coming, so they'd best be watching. Or, I can imagine she is calling her audience whiny little kids, which in my ever aging mind paints an awesome image of a sassy old lady giving it to those whipper-snappers. Get off my lawn children and get your crap together! Sojourner Truth ain't takin' it anymore.  I love it.
