Grammar
  • Learned about the two uses of semicolons
    • Rule # 8 - Use a semi colon to separate 2 independent clauses. Notice the lack of a conjunction and the comma when using conjunctive adverbs like however.
      • EXAMPLE: We can go to the museum to do some research; Mondays are pretty quiet there.
      • EXAMPLE: The students had been advised against walking alone at night; however, Cathy decided walking wasn’t dangerous if it was early in the evening.

    • Rule #9 - Semicolons and Serial lists. Use a semicolon when a list already contains commas
      • EXAMPLE: I need the weather statistics for London, England; London, Ontario; Paris, France; Paris, Ontario; Perth, Scotland; Perth, Ontario.
      • EXAMPLE: My plan included taking him to a nice dinner; going to the park to look at the stars, which, by the way, are amazing this time of year; and serenading him with my accordion.
