Finished Act III in The Crucible.

Discussed the following reflection questions:
  1. Analyze Judge Danforth’s logic in conducting the court hearings on witchcraft. What’s your opinion of this logic and the way he’s running the court?
  2. Evaluate why Arthur Miller’s decides to make Abigail have so much power. Why is the court protecting/believing the girls?
  3. Explain Elizabeth Proctor’s reaction to Judge Danforth’s question about why she released Abigail from the Proctor household.

2/16/2016

Continued watching through Act II of the Crucible.

Began answering the following questions:
  1. Elizabeth says she doesn’t believe in witches. Why might this disbelief shock the Reverend Hale so much? Consider his profession and past actions.
  2. Describe John’s behavior so far in the play and interpret his actions and attitudes. Are they justified? Reference the play to support your answer, but direct citations are not needed.
  3. Miller wrote this play during anti-communist hearings of the 1950’s. He stated, “I saw accepted the notion that conscience was no longer a private matter, but one of state administration.” How does this idea of the 1950’s apply to the witch hunts we’re reading about?

Argument Wednesday - Ranking Evidence

Things that limit a source:
  •  Problems with validity
    •  Date
    •  Publisher/audience
    •  Credible author
    •  Credible online source
    •  References
  •  Bias of publication of source
  •  Commercial motives
  •  Too narrow/broad perspective for topic
  •  Other side not represented

Assignment:
Read one of the articles attached in the document below and fill out one row of the "Jigsaw note catcher." Then, in a group of three, compare the articles you choose and then rank the evidence between most relevant and least relevant if you were writing a research article about the US accepting Syrian refugees.

Assignment

Considering our discussion about state legislated morality, write about whether you think should the government should or should not legislate moral issues and to what extent. Theorize the repercussions of your decision.

Finish Act 2 of the crucible.

Review of Act 1
ANALYZE: What role, or roles, does Abigail play in inciting the group hysteria that Act 1 ends with?

Read the first half of Act 2 in The Crucible.

Began talking about government based legislation of morality. Will finish tomorrow.

NOTE:
If you ever miss a day in class where we read, be sure to make the reading. My suggestion would be to search Youtube for the corresponding act and listen to it.

Act 1 audio 0:00-33:00
Act 2 audio 33:00-59:47
Act 3 audio 59:47-1:30:19
Act 4 audio 1:30:20-1:58:00
