Assignment
Answer the following chapter 24-31 comprehension and connection questions
  1. In your opinion, what’s the worst thing the King and the Duke do. Explain your answer in comparison to some of the other vile actions they take.
  2. Explain the scenario in which Huck openly defies the King and the Duke for the first time. What does Huck do and why does he do it?
  3. Mr. Restad believes chapter 31 should have been the climax of the novel. Alas, Twain went on for another 10 chapters. But, looking at chapter 31 explain why might Mr. Restad think this is the high point of tension and a turning point in the story. Back up your answer with at least two reasons from the chapter.

Chapter 19-24 Comprehension/Connection assessment questions:
Answer each question thoroughly:
  •  using a topic sentence to make a claim,
  •  back that answer up with reference to the text,
  •  and provide reasoning as to why your support is valid.

  1. Huck soon realizes the King and Duke are con men and liars, yet why doesn’t he confront them or tell Jim they are frauds? (Chapter 19)
  2. Thinking back to the message of Colonel Sherbern’s speech, why should Sherbern’s ideas about bravery resonate with Huck (whether Huck realizes it or not)? (Chapter 22)
  3. The Duke and the King lead Huck and Jim on a series of frauds and cons. After a particularly lucrative con, Jim mentions, “Doesn’t it surprise you the way them kings carry on?” to which Huck responds, “No.”
  • What do the Duke and the King represent?
  • What does Twain’s satire of the Duke and the King and Jim and Huck’s discussion on page 154 reveal about actual people of political power? (Chapter 23)
