Read chapter 31 aloud, summarized rest of book.

If you missed class (or didn't score 7 out of 10 on the quiz) answer the following questions.

Huck Finn – Chapter 24 - 31 assessment questions
Answer each question thoroughly:
  •  using a topic sentence to make a claim,
  •  back that answer up with reference to the text,
  •  and provide reasoning as to why your support is valid.

  1. Explain the scenario in which Huck openly defies the King and the Duke for the first time. What does Huck do and why does he do it? Focus on an analysis of what this turning point might mean for Huck. (Chapter 26)
  2. In your opinion, what’s the worst thing the King and the Duke do? Explain your answer in comparison to some of the other vile actions they take.
  3. Mr. Restad believes chapter 31 should have been the climax of the novel. Alas, Twain went on for another 10 chapters. But, looking at chapter 31 explain why might Mr. Restad think this is the high point of tension and a turning point in the story. Back up your answer with at least two reasons from the chapter.

“It is a novel where a sound heart and a deformed conscience come into collision and conscience suffers defeat.  The conscience – that unerring monitor—can be trained to any wild thing you want it to approve.”

Essay drafts due Wednesday, Nov. 30th at the end of the day.
Students NOT turning in their drafts will be referred to lunch detention until finished.
Students who DID turn in their essay will get a mini incentive day on Thursday, Dec. 1

In-Class Write
How do you know your idea of right is right?
•What feedback do you have?
•How do YOU make moral determinations?
•What if it’s not? How would you figure it out?

Reviewed chapters 19-24

Huck Finn – Chapter 19-24 assessment questions
Answer each question thoroughly:
  •  using a topic sentence to make a claim,
  •  back that answer up with reference to the text,
  •  and provide reasoning as to why your support is valid.

  1. Huck soon realizes the King and Duke are con men and liars, yet why doesn’t he confront them or tell Jim they are frauds? (Chapter 19)

  2. Thinking back to the message of Colonel Sherburn’s speech, why should Sherburn’s ideas about bravery resonate with Huck (whether Huck realizes it or not)? (Chapter 22)

  3. The Duke and the King lead Huck and Jim on a series of frauds and cons. After a particularly lucrative con, Jim mentions, “Doesn’t it surprise you the way them kings carry on?” to which Huck responds, “No.”
    • Thinking about this, infer what the Duke and the King represent.
    • Then, explain what Jim and Huck’s discussion on page 154 reveals about actual people of political power? (Chapter 23)
