Huck Finn – Chapter 19-24 assessment questions
Answer each question thoroughly:

•  using a topic sentence to make a claim,
•  back that answer up with reference to the text,
•  and provide reasoning as to why your support is valid.
  
  

1. Huck soon realizes the King and Duke are con men and liars, yet why doesn’t he confront them or tell Jim they are frauds? (Chapter 19)
   
   
2. Thinking back to the message of Colonel Sherburn’s speech, why should Sherburn’s ideas about bravery resonate with Huck (whether Huck realizes it or not)? (Chapter 22)
   
   
3. The Duke and the King lead Huck and Jim on a series of frauds and cons. After a particularly lucrative con, Jim mentions, “Doesn’t it surprise you the way them kings carry on?” to which Huck responds, “No.”
   • Thinking about this, infer what the Duke and the King represent.
   • Then, explain what Jim and Huck’s discussion on page 154 reveals about actual people of political power? (Chapter 23)
