Figurative Language Review

  • 3 - The main idea of the paragraph is to show how her aunt is feeling as she goes to the concert. The auther uses figurative language to compare her aunt to a dirty miner whos in a five star hotel. This means that she feels out of place at this concert because of what she is wearing and she hasn't been to a concert in 25 years.

  • 4 - The figurative language magnifies the obsurdity of the misjudgement of Cather upon her aunt. She had previously thought that her aunt would feel out of place for not dressing within the constraints of fashion of the times. Furthermore, she thought that her aunt would feel irrelevant and outdated, as she had not experienced a concert in 25 years, and the times had no doubt changed. However, rather than shrinking/hiding due to her being out of place, a quiet stoicism overtook her, like that of a museum statue. This stoic manner conveyed to others that she was ware of something, aware of herself and her own being more so than they were, and that she had dressed in such a manner to flaunt her knowledge.
