If you want to raise your 1.4 vocabulary skill, you have to have your Book Vocab done and show me all the words you identified from the Great Gatsby.

AGENDA
  • PLAN for Writing assignment
  • Paraphrase the writing task
    1. Select one of the authors we read so far in this unit (King, Douglass, Frost, or Whitman) and explain what their point is about what makes or prevents a person from living a good life. Be sure to represent the specifics of their argument.
    2. Select, cite, and analyze one figure of speech from their text. Explain what they mean in this passage and analyze the impact that literary device has on the text.
    3. Evaluate: Do you agree with this author? Why or why not? What ideas are particularly strong, weak, or different in today’s world versus?

REVIEW READINGS
  • Select a text and make sure you have it annotated for the following...
    1. Underline and label figurative language you notice.
    2. Jot down notes on what the theme is or the lesson about life in the piece
    3. How does the author develop the main idea? Place a “D” next to lines you see theme development.
    4. Place a checkmark next to lines you can connect to or that you like. You can explain that connection in the margin.
    5. What does the author want the reader to understand?
    6. Why did the author write this piece?

  • Identify the main idea of the piece. Be as specific as possible

  • Identify a piece of figurative language (metaphor, hyperbole, personification, analogy) that you think backs up that main idea.
    1. Determine what it means
    2. Interpret how the author uses figurative language to back up the main idea.

  • Brainstorm some ideas on how YOU respond to the piece. What do you like? What do you disagree with? What is still relevant to today’s world? What would this author have to add or change if they were writing this piece today?

PREWRITE
  • Review and Summary: make sense of the content you’re writing about. Paraphrase, summarize, write reflections, feedback, or questions for the author.
  • Freewriting: 90% bullcrap, but that 10% is where you need to start!
  • List-Making/outlining: Helps find NEW connections
  • Diagrams/Drawings: Graphic organizers like word webs or flow charts.
