AGENDA
  • Read two student narrative examples and consider the following questions.
    • What does the author use as an intro/exposition
      What’s the rising action (what is building)?
      What’s the climax?
      What’s the significance of this story to the author?
      What message is the author trying to convey to their reader?
      How does the narrator use action and reflection?
      What's one example of the author SHOWING not TELLING us a detail.
      Find one use of sensory or descriptive imagery. 
  • Begin typing and revising narrative drafts. 
  • Revision Tips - Kill your darlings 
    • Align Things
      •Make sure you are doing the things necessary for the assignment. (Look at rubrics and success criteria. See below or on the Narrative assignment document)
    • Add things
      •stronger details, more description, another event or observation
    • Remove things
      •doesn’t support narrative flow
      •not relevant detail
    • Refine ideas
      •What is my focus?
      •Selecting more accurate details or events
    • Reorganize
      •Should an idea be brought up earlier or later?
      •Do paragraphs clearly build towards something?
      •Do your sentences flow?

  • I can engage and orient the reader by 
    • setting out a problem, situation, or observation and its significance, 
    • establishing a point of view, and introducing a narrator and/or characters; 
    • create a smooth progression of experiences or events
  • Write narratives to 
    • develop real experiences or events

    • well-chosen details, 
    • and well-structured event sequences
