  • BIG QUESTION for discussion: How does a person’s perspective of the past affect their pursuit of happiness? 
  • Perspectives to consider. What do these perspectives show us about pursuing happiness in our own lives?
    1. “Can’t repeat the past?! Why of course you can!” –Jay Gatsby Humans are not doomed to be depressed as they age. The joys of a person’s youth can certainly be relived. It takes much dedication, but through persistence and hard work a person can create a life for themselves that carries the happiness of former years.
       
       
    2. “It makes me sad because I've never seen such… such beautiful shirts before.” –Daisy Buchannan. Like Daisy’s tragic shirt crying incident, a person can never truly relive the past. People can only reflect on their past and how it has shaped them. A life is the sum of past actions and decisions. There is no going back.
       
       
    3. “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne endlessly into the past” –Nick Carraway. The past can neither be relived in its former glory nor can it be escaped. As humans we are constantly fighting against what we were and what we’re trying to be. True happiness comes with the acceptance of facing adversity.
