• Start on reading one more essay from the selected list and craft your personal response using the format below.
  1. CLAIM: An assertion of the truth of something. In this case, it’s what you’re trying to prove about the story
  2. SIGNAL PHRASE: An introduction or transition to a piece of evidence. Usually references the context of the story or the author.
  3. EVIDENCE (x2): The evidence is the data used to support the claim. This can be explicit (directly stated) or implicit (implied) from the story.
  4. ANALYSIS (x2): A breakdown of the evidence. This should explain the “why and how” of the evidence as support for the claim. It is your reasoning for why you think what you do.
